Synopsis

Rosalie is walking her favourite cliff path when a storm blows in. She takes shelter in a small cave to wait for the storm to pass but her exit becomes blocked by a rockfall. Time weighs heavy as she hopes and waits to be rescued and memories of her son, Jonnie, a climate activist, lost at sea, come back, unbidden. She talks to a sick cormorant about her life, the loss of her son and how she has been fighting for environmental issues, since his death, to try and make his loss mean something. Her commitment to climate activism has created conflict with her family and friends and she feels alone in her struggle to save the planet.

At the end of the novel, she is rescued.

Example Book Cover Descriptions

The wood cut technique gives the retro feel which would be good for a book about looking back over one’s life and The Salt Path in particular has a similar theme of a journey of the soul.

key elements in the story are : the path; the cliffs; the bird; the sea
the feelings are loss and grief so muted colours, possibly green- blues
nature has to feature as it is about our destruction of nature

Wrong Direction Book Covers

Wrong Direction Book Cover Descriptions

The Ice: This cover features a cave but it is too arty and conceptual for this story set on the south coast of England
Flight Behaviour: This cover is too bright and golden in tone and looks merely decorative
Memory of Water: This cover focuses on only one element and has an end of summer feel with the yellow
